'The Hillsboro Story'
To the editor:
I would like to thank everyone who went to see "The Hillsboro Story" at Southern State Community College on Sept. 28. This was performed by Susan Banyas and her fellow performers.
I, like many others, have lived "The Hillsboro Story."
I didn't put into perspective what these ladies and families went through so that we as African-Americans could get a fair shake at education in Hillsboro.
I would like to thank Elsie Steward Young, Gertrude Clemons Hudson, Imogene Curtis, Eleanor Curtis Cumberland, Doris Cumberland Woods and Joyce Clemons Kittrels. To Mr. Philip Partridge and family for their courage and to Mary Hackney, a Quaker teacher.
Some of these people have since passed away. Please remember them and their families in your prayers for the bravery they showed for what's just. We have had a lot of good folks help in our struggle for a fair education system in Hillsboro and around the country.
We have an African-American teacher, in my opinion, who is going through "The Hillsboro Story" right now … the old doctrine of "separate but equal."
He is being bussed from his former school to another school where he is a teacher. In my opinion, this should not have been the outcome of what he and his family are going through.
If you want to help, my name is Rick Burns. I live at 5431 U.S. 50 west, Hillsboro, Ohio 45133.
Thanks, and may God bless each and every one of us.
Sincerely,
Rick Burns
