Final political push on State Issue 2

Editor's note: The Highland County Press received these two letters today regarding Ohio Issue 2, the repeal of Senate Bill 5.
The first was from Ohio Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor. The second was from Jason Perlman, of the Ohio AFL-CIO.
We thought our readers would find them of interest prior to the Nov. 8 general election.
(To the editor):
In five days, we will decide the future of our state.
I hope you can take a minute to read this excellent summary of Issue 2 by Kevin O'Brien, a columnist <http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=leJJILNsFaJKJ6K&s=nmL2JeOVKcLRIePZKsG&m…; at The Plain Dealer in Cleveland.
Here's a quick preview:
"Issue 2 opponents have worked hard to make this election about emotion. They have also ignored the inconvenient certainty that the financial situations of localities across Ohio will necessitate layoffs, whether or not Issue 2 passes. They are quite prepared, though of course they will not say so, to resort to the time-honored union practice of "eating their young" when layoff time comes, so as to protect union leaders and other senior employees. That's why any talk of merit is anathema to them.
If they win Tuesday, it will be because a majority of Ohioans do not understand the seriousness of an impending fiscal crisis at all levels of government."
Let's make sure that doesn't happen. We've made so much progress this year, from eliminating an $8 billion budget shortfall without raising taxes to saving or creating 35,000 jobs. We can't afford to turn back now.
Please share this email with your Ohio friends and family, and encourage them to get out and vote YES on Issue 2 now by early ballot or in-person at Tuesday's election.
Together, we can build a better Ohio for this generation and the next.
Sincerely,
Mary Taylor
Ohio's Lieutenant Governor

(To the editor):
Starting Saturday, Ohioans across the state will participate in get-out-the-vote efforts to make sure Ohioans vote NO on Issue 2/SB 5.
We made history when we rallied at Statehouse the biggest protests Ohio had seen in decades. We made history when we turned in over 1.3 million signatures to get SB 5 on the ballot to allow Ohioans to cast a citizens' veto. And, over the next four days, we will make history again. And you can be a part of it.
Will you volunteer an hour of your time to phone bank or canvass to defeat Issue 2/SB 5?
We have a huge task ahead of us but it is nothing we haven't done before. From this weekend to Election Day, November 8, we need to contact as many Ohioans as possible to so they know why Issue 2/SB 5 is bad for working families, the middle class and the safety of our communities.
The pro SB 5 side has done everything they can to confuse voters and their deep-pocketed, out-of-state friends are spending big these final days on television ads to further distort the facts on Issue 2/SB 5. That is why it is so important that we talk to Ohioans from today to Election Day, Tuesday, November 8, to make sure they vote and that they understand voting NO on Issue 2/SB 5 will stop the attacks on firefighters, nurses, teachers, police officers and other public workers who keep our communities strong and safe.
Even if you volunteer for one hour, it can make the difference in this election. Don't miss your chance to be a part of history again.
In Solidarity,
Jason Perlman
