Lady Mustangs volleyball falls to Wellston in sectional semifinals

DODSONVILLE — The end of the 2023 volleyball season occurred on Tuesday night for the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs, as they were defeated in the Division III SE District Sectional Semifinals by the visiting Wellston Lady Golden Rockets in three consecutive sets.

The Lady Mustangs lost by scores of 25-12, 25-07 and 25-11.

Wellston’s dominant effort on Tuesday was highlighted by team totals that included 28 kills, 16 aces, eight total blocks, 42 digs and 26 assists.

Leading WHS in kills was Mykenna Eberts with 10, while Hannah Potts finished next with six. Karly Rinehart totaled five kills, while Josslyn Vickers had four. Lauren Cheatham followed with three kills against LCHS.

Wellston’s Allison Davis was their leader in aces with five, while the trio of Eberts, Elin Walters and Shayla Sims each had three aces. With one ace each were Sarah Martin and Potts.

Potts was Wellston’s leader in total blocks with five, and in digs the Golden Rockets’ leader was Davis with 14, followed by Martin with 11 and Eberts with 10. Sims led WHS with 26 assists.

Leaders for the Lady Mustangs included Halle Greene with three kills, as LCHS totaled nine as a team. Also with kills were Matalyn Magee and Ava McLaughlin with two each, and with one kill each were Addy Carraher and Kylie O’Connor.

LCHS finished with seven assists, with McLaughlin leading with three, followed by Carraher with two. With one each were Ava Doughman and Joslyn Rockey.

Allison Rockey finished with a team-best three aces in the game, while Carraher, Greene and O’Connor each had one ace in the loss.

The digs leader was Joslyn Rockey with eight, and as a team the Lady Mustangs totaled 34. Others with digs included Carraher with six, Doughman with four, Greene (two), Autumn Griffith (one), McLaughlin (two), O’Connor (one), Allison Rockey (five) and Avery Shope (five).

The Lady Mustangs also had three team blocks, with Matalyn Magee with two and Carraher with one.

Overall this season, Lynchburg-Clay finishes with a record of 7-15, as they were 5-8 in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference (Division I) standings.

Seniors for LCHS are Allison Rockey and Autumn Griffith.
