Lady Indians defeat Gallia Academy, fall to Unioto over weekend

Playing two games on Saturday, the Hillsboro Lady Indians softball team split their weekend games at the Blue Angels Classic, where they defeated Gallia Academy and lost to the Unioto Lady Shermans, both non-conference games.

Hillsboro started the game with a strong first inning with the top of the first seeing them score four runs, followed by one run in the top of the third for a 5-0 lead.

GAHS scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth, and the fifth inning saw HHS score a run, while Gallia Academy added two runs to their total. 

HHS added a run in the top of the sixth and two runs in the top of the seventh. Gallia Academy scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but HHS was able to hang on for the win.

HHS ended the game with nine hits and committed three errors, and GAHS totaled 11 hits and committed two errors.

Hannah Burton was the winning pitcher, as she spent 6.1 innings in the circle. She allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks. Burton also struck out seven batters, finishing with 110 pitches, 57 for strikes, facing a total of 32 batters.

Camryn Spruell had the save, where in 0.2 innings she allowed no runs or hits, but struck out two batters. She faced four batters, throwing 12 pitches, 10 for strikes.

At the plate, Spruell was 3-for-3 with four runs, a home run, three RBI, a walk and three steals.

Halle Reveal went 2-for-4 with a run and three steals. Kinsey Gilliland finished 1-for-3 with two runs and a walk.

Addie Huff went 1-for-4 with two RBI, and Isabelle Brunck collected a run and a walk. Hannah Burton was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double. Clemons scored a run, and Morgan Garman had an RBI.

In their second game on Saturday, the Lady Indians faced the Unioto Lady Shermans, falling in the non-conference game by an 8-6 score.

Hillsboro led 2-1 after the first inning and scored four runs in the bottom of the second for a 6-1 advantage. Both teams were scoreless in the third and fourth innings, but the fifth inning saw UHS score four runs, then the Lady Shermans added three runs in the top of the sixth for the eventual 8-6 win.

Unioto finished with five hits and committed three errors, and Hillsboro had eight hits and two errors.

Halle Reveal scored a run for HHS, while Eowyn Brown was 2-for-3 with one run, one RBI and was hit by a pitch. Kinsey Gilliland went 1-for-2 with two runs and two walks.

Camryn Spruell finished 2-for-4 with one run, three RBI and a home run. Addie Huff ended the day with two RBI, while Isabelle. Brunck was 1-for-4. Chloe Roberts went 2-for-3, and Morgan Garman had a steal and scored a run.

Spruell was charged with the loss, pitching seven innings, allowing eight runs (six earned) on five hits and is walks. She totaled nine strikeouts as she threw 145 pitches, 90 for strikes, facing 35 batters.

HHS now stands at 5-2 overall.
