By
University of Dayton, Press Release

The University of Dayton Athletic Hall of Fame will grow by four on Saturday, Dec. 13 when the 2026 class is introduced at halftime of the Dayton-North Florida men's basketball game. The ceremonies on Dec. 13 will bring the total membership in UD's Hall of Fame to 205.

The new members are Kelley Austria (basketball) Doug Hauschild (administration), Chris Lemon (cross country) and Obi Toppin (basketball).

The philanthropic benefactors of the University of Dayton Athletic Hall of Fame are Kurt and Joyce (Mahrt) Friedmann.

KELLEY AUSTRIA '17– Basketball 2012-2017

Kelley Austria gained a reputation as a quiet defensive assassin, yet she scored nearly 1,200 points in her career. Best described as simply a winner, she played on four Flyer NCAA teams. Her impact on winning may have been best explained by her absence – she redshirted the 2015-16 season with a severe knee injury in that year's eighth game. UD was 6-1 before the injury, and 8-14 after.

She earned Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year honors as well as All-Defensive Team and Second Team All-Conference as a redshirt senior, 15 months after tearing her ACL.

Austria is 21st in career scoring at UD, with 1,197 points. She is second in career steals (226) and career steal average (1.88). UD's record for her four full years was 101-28.

Austria is currently working toward a graduate degree in Physical Therapy at Bowling Green.

DOUG HAUSCHILD '81 – Administration 1978-2025

Doug Hauschild retired from the University of Dayton as a full-time employee in July after nearly 47 years working in the UD sports information/athletics communications office (43 as a full-time employee). In his time at Dayton, Hauschild was primarily the media contact for Flyer football and men's basketball.

He was inducted into the College Sports Communicators (formerly known as the College Sports Information Directors of America) Hall of Fame in 2020. Hauschild was presented the CoSIDA 25-Year Award in 2008 and received the Bob Kenworthy Award for his community service at the 2009 CoSIDA Convention. He has also served on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee since 1993 and earned the Lester Jordan Award for service to the Academic All-America program in 2021.

He is the only person to earn all four of those honors.

During his 43 years as a full-time sports professional, the Dayton Athletics Communications Office had 61 student workers go on to work in college and professional athletics after graduation.

Hauschild has worked 120 NCAA men's basketball tournament games at UD Arena, the last 100 serving as Media Coordinator.

Hauschild continues to work part-time for the Flyers as the Athletics Historian and Director of Special Projects.

CHRIS LEMON '11 – Cross Country 2007-2010

Chris Lemon is the only two-time University of Dayton men's cross country qualifier to the NCAA national championship meet. As sophomores in 2008, Chris and his twin brother Matt were the first Flyers to reach the NCAA meet. Chris finished 102nd overall, was the 20th sophomore and first finisher from the Atlantic 10 Conference. He then returned to the meet as senior in 2010, placing 84th.

He was the 2009 A-10 individual men's cross country champion. He also placed second in 2010 and third in 2008. In addition, he was NCAA Great Lakes All-Region in 2008 and 2010.

Lemon has posted the top three times in UD history in the 10k event, including the school record of 30:31.5. His best 8k performance of 24:05.0 was the Flyer record for 16 years.

A team captain and MVP as a senior, Lemon was a two-time Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year, three-time A-10 All-Academic and two-time Academic All-American.

After graduation, he continued to run competitively for another 12 years. Lemon qualified for the 2016 US Olympic trials in the marathon, and won the Birmingham (Ala.) Marathon in 2023.

Lemon currently teaches Spanish at Northmont High School near Dayton.

OBI TOPPIN – Basketball 2017-2020

The 2020 consensus National Player of the Year in men's basketball, Obi Toppin was Dayton's first consensus All-American. He led UD to a 29-2 record and a final No. 3 national ranking in the Covid-shortened 2019-20 season.

Toppin was the only player in the country who averaged 20.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and shot over 60% from the field that season, with final numbers of 20.0 points, 7.5 rebounds a game, and.633 (245-387) from the field, (along with .390 (32-82) from 3-pt. range and .702 (99-141) from the line. He was fifth nationally in field goal percentage, even though he took more than double the number of three-pointers the rest of the top 10 combined.

He led the nation in dunks in 2019-20, with a school-record 107. His 190 career dunks are also a Dayton record. While on the subject of dunks, the last five field goals of his college career were dunks (after the first two FG's of his career were also dunks)

Toppin is the Dayton record holder for career field goal percentage by a scant .0004. His .6473 (446-689) edged Sean Finn's previous record of .6469 (414-640).

The native of the Big Apple was a lottery pick by the New York Knicks in the 2020 NBA draft. Toppin now plays for the Indiana Pacers.
