The city of Hillsboro has voted to apply for a grant that could lead to funds for an additional officer with the Hillsboro Police Department.
  By city statute, the HPD is short approximately five officers because budget constraints prevented the city from hiring new officers following the retirements of several officers in 2010 and 2011.

The future of the annual Thunder in the Hills race is uncertain due to diminished funds, but organizers with the Southern Ohio Powerboat Association said the racers themselves are stepping in to make sure that one of the largest races in the nation can continue for its 25th year.
  Race director Dean Davis said that approximately $12,000 is needed to put on the event, which is slated for the weekend of Sep. 17-18.
