USDA working to reach out to ag producers

USDA, through the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is working to reach out and provide information to Ag Producers who not have historically participated in conservation programs available through NRCS and Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

On June 30, 2012, NRCS is sponsoring a Conservation Program Outreach Meeting specifically designed to inform and communicate with underserved agricultural producers. The conference will be held at the OSU South Center’s “Endeavor Center” located just off US Rt. 32 near Piketon, Ohio, and is being made possible through an agreement with the Ohio Association of RC&D Councils. A second meeting is scheduled for Kenyon College on Saturday June 23.

An informative agenda will review the programs available through NRCS and will highlight research being performed by Ohio State researchers at the South Centers. Grazing Specialist, Bob Hendershot, will be the luncheon speaker, discussing the need for and value of Grazing Management Plans for area livestock producers. Such voluntary plans are available whether a producer is raising cattle, sheep, goats, or horses. The agency has recently contracted with four (4) grazing management specialists in Southern Ohio to exclusively help producers complete these grazing plans.

NRCS programs are much more diverse than producers may realize and include many specialty agriculture ventures. Programs now prioritize assistance to organic farmers and offer assistance for the purchase of high tunnel greenhouses for flower and/or vegetable growers. The agency also continues to provide assistance for fencing, watering facilities, pasture and hayland seedings, heavy use feeding pads, access roads, and stream crossings all in support of livestock producers. If a producer is a beginning farmer/rancher (10 yrs. or less), woman, minority, or socially or economically-disadvantaged producer, they are encouraged to attend one of these meetings. The first 75 registrants are eligible to receive a $50 stipend/scholarship to cover travel costs.
