A two-vehicle crash closed U.S. 62 south of Hillsboro early Wednesday morning.

According to a Highland County Sheriff's Office deputy, a four-door sedan apparently crashed into the rear of a dump truck around 7 a.m. in New Market Township.

In addition to the HCSO, Paint Creek EMS and Fire District was on the scene just after 7 a.m.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Highland County coroner were called to investigate.

The OSHP said a dump truck was stopped behind a Rumpke truck on northbound U.S. 62 when a car struck the dump truck from behind.

The driver of the car, Travis W. Gard, 38, of New Market Township, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Highland County coroner.

The driver of the dump truck, Ricky Yates, 59, of West Union, reported a minor injury and was not hospitalized.

The Ohio Department of Transportation District 9 also alerted motorists that the highway was temporarily closed Wednesday morning. The highway was re-opened shortly after 10 a.m., ODOT said.
