CHILLICOTHE – Holidays and weekends are usually quite busy for motorists, and this year’s Mother’s Day weekend will likely be busier than most in southern Ohio as bicyclists join motorists on several local and state roadways.
On May 8 and 9, bicyclists will be making their way from Columbus to Portsmouth as part of the 49th annual Tour of the Scioto River Valley (TOSRV) bike ride.
Sponsored by Columbus Outdoor Pursuits, a volunteer-based organization that provides opportunities for outdoor recreation and activities, the TOSRV is one of the country’s largest bicycle touring weekends. Organizers of this year’s event anticipate approximately 3,000 bicyclists will be touring the region, following along the Scioto River between Central Ohio and the Ohio River.
“With Mother’s Day, graduations and the TOSRV ride, this will be an especially busy weekend for those who will be traveling – be it by bike, car or other means of transportation,” said Ohio Department of Transportation District 9 Deputy Director James A. Brushart.
“Whether you live and work here or you are visiting from outside the area, our utmost concern is for the safety of all who use our roadways, and as there will be thousands of people participating in this weekend’s TOSRV event, there will be a heightened need for safety and attention by both motorists and bicyclists,” Brushart added.
While some bicyclists may choose to travel along different roadways, the organization’s planned route from Circleville to Yoctangee Park in Chillicothe is via state Route 104, and from Chillicothe to Waverly, bicyclists will travel Three Locks Road, crossing the Scioto River at Higby Road and continuing to Old U.S. 35 and Watson Road at Richmond Dale and then to S.R. 335 into Waverly. The bicyclists will return to S.R. 104 in Waverly and continue on this to Portsmouth.
With bicyclists traveling through the construction project on Ohio-104 in Ross County, ODOT has erected flashing message board signs in the Chillicothe area alerting motorists of the upcoming bike ride. Local motorists are also being encouraged to travel the S.R. 104 alternate route that has been posted as part of the major widening project; this route is via Bridge Street (S.R. 159), U.S. 23 and S.R. 207.
During the upcoming weekend bike tour and whenever traveling alongside bicyclists, motorists are reminded to share the road, drive responsibly and exercise additional caution.
