Sheeley places second in State FFA Proficiency competition

On May 3, at the 2012 Ohio FFA Convention, Kelsey Sheeley of the Hillsboro
FFA placed second in Diversified Livestock Production Proficiency Award.
Kelsey is the daughter of Tim and Karen Sheeley of Hillsboro and a 2011
graduate of Hillsboro High School.
The Ohio FFA recognized FFA members in 50 proficiency award areas. Winners
were selected based on their Supervised Agricultural Experience Program
(SAEP) and their involvement in the specific award area.
Kelsey developed an SAEP that included 20 head of breeding cattle and 20
head of breeding ewes. She produced 19 calves and 25 lambs in 2011. Kelsey
assumed the management and care for these breeding animals.
Along with feeding and providing the health program, she assists during
birth and provides needed care for the young. Kelsey has utilized artificial
insemination and embryo transfer in her breeding cattle. She markets her
cattle and sheep through state and breed association consignment sales.
Kelsey has exhibited the cattle and sheep at the North American
International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky., and at the National
Western Stock Show in Denver. She is an active member of the American and
Ohio Junior Simmental Association and the American and Ohio Gelbvieh Junior
Association and has exhibited at Junior National shows for each association.
She currently serves as the president of the Highland County Junior Fair
Board and has served as 2011 Highland County Lamb and Wool Queen and 2011
Ohio Hampshire Sheep Queen. Kelsey attends Wilmington College and majors in
agricultural education.
