Renovations planned for Darke Wildlife Area ponds
Two ponds at Darke Wildlife Area in Darke County are undergoing renovations to improve access and repair damaged areas, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.
Pond renovations include installing new outflow structures and removing woody vegetation. These improvements will extend the life of the nearly 60-year-old structures.
Construction is expected to conclude mid-winter. To ensure public safety and to allow crews to work efficiently, some closures to the Horatio-New Harrison Road parking lot near U.S. 36 as well as the Lehman Road parking lot are expected. Water levels will be lowered during renovations, which could limit fishing opportunities.
Darke Wildlife Area was purchased by the state beginning in 1960. Construction of the current pond system was initiated soon afterwards. The area includes a diverse mix of open land, woodland, and early successional wildlife habitat that has provided generations of outdoor enthusiasts with quality hunting, fishing and birding opportunities.
The mission of the Division of Wildlife is to conserve and improve fish and wildlife resources and their habitats for sustainable use and appreciation by all. Visit wildohio.gov to find out more.
