Pence announces candidacy for Highland County commissioner

Former Hillsboro City Council member Peter Pence has announced his candidacy for Highland County commissioner.

Pence, who is running as a Republican, had served on Hillsboro City Council for five years as a Democrat, and was the finance committee chair for four of those years.

He has also worked in real estate sales and development with Donald E. Fender Realtors since 2005.

Pence also ran as a Democratic candidate for state representative in the 91st District against Cliff Rosenberger.

Pence joins Republicans Jeff Duncan, Dave Gingerich and Fred Kay in the primary race for the seat currently occupied by Highland County Commissioner Jeremy Shaffer.

Democratic candidate Randy Mustard is unopposed in the May 6 primary.

Pence said that the lack of jobs for those living in Highland County inspired him to run for commissioner.

"I want to work to provide more opportunities for the citizens of Highland County," Pence said. "We have high unemployment rates, drug abuse problems and, ultimately, poverty. I'd like to work toward better opportunities for all the citizens of Highland County."

Pence currently serves as treasurer of the Highland District Hospital Foundation Board and as a member of the St. Mary Catholic School Board and Hillsboro Revolving Loan Fund Board.

Pence is also a member of the Hillsboro Elks Lodge #362, where he previously served as secretary; the Hillsboro Fraternal Order of Eagles #1161; and the Highland County Farm Bureau.

Pence is a graduate of Hillsboro High School and majored in business management with a minor in economics at Wilmington College.

Pence and his wife, Holly, have two children: Walker, 6, and Riley, 4. Pence and his family attend St. Mary Catholic Church.
