Southern Highland Joint Fire District along with Hillsboro Fire and Rescue, Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire District, Lynchburg Joint Fire District, and Sardinia Fire Department responded to a working structure fire at 3305 North Sanders Road at approximately 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31.

Upon arrival, firefighters found flames extending from the second-story windows and immediately began efforts to extinguish the blaze.

The fire did extensive damage to the second floor of the home, with significant smoke and water damage to the first floor of the residence.

One firefighter was treated for injuries he sustained when a portion of the ceiling fell on him. He was transported to Highland District Hospital in Hillsboro. The injuries are not believed to be serious.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated; however, at the time of the fire, there was a large amount of lightning in the area which may be to blame.

Shortly after this fire was reported, a second structure fire was reported on S.R. 136. That fire was determined to be a result of a lightning strike.

There was no significant fire at that scene; however, the lightning did cause damage through the roof ceilings and floors of that residence.
