Masonry students from Shawn Wilkin's junior and senior classes at Laurel Oaks were busy removing and replacing 450 engraved bricks at the Veterans Memorial outside the Highland County Courthouse Wednesday, Nov. 7.

There is additional work to be completed.

"We were working against the weather and a tight time frame during school-time," Wilkin said.

Wilkin thanks all those who supported his crew by setting their busy schedules aside and helping support this activity. Appreciation is extended to: The Business and Industry Advisory Committee for the Masonry Program; Bill Mason Jr. and Miller Mason Paving; Jeff Richmond, of Richmond Concrete; Harsha Monument Co.; John Walker and Lynchburg-Clay Superintendent Shane Shope for bus transportation; George Stewart, Bob McLaughlin, Ed Davidson, Louise Curtis, Rick Wilkin, and Judy and Mac McCray.

"This has been an ongoing project as we honor our veterans for their past and present service," Wilkin said.

Memorial bricks in recognition of a Highland County veteran are available by contacting the Hillsboro VFW Post 9094 at 393-0211. Approximately 1,300 engraved bricks have been purchased, said George Stewart of the VFW.

Next spring, the memorial engraving is planned for Highland County veterans killed in action along the Walk of Honor, said retired Army Maj. Mac McCray.

Stewart and McCray thanked Mr. Wilkin and his students for their volunteer work and all those in the community who have supported the memorial.
