KAMP Dovetail Week at RFL

The 32nd annual KAMP (Kids And Motivated People) Dovetail is in full swing this week at Rocky Fork State Park in Liberty Township.

The annual weeklong camp gives children and young adults with developmental disabilities the opportunity to camp out and to participate in summertime activities such as boating, fishing, horseback riding and swimming, as well as many other recreational activities.

In a typical year, KAMP Dovetail accommodates approximately 275 overnight campers, 35 day campers, 400 one-on-one volunteers and more than 70 staff members.

KAMP Director Linda Allen said the Monday evening and early Tuesday morning rain showers soaked some of the campers and volunteers, but everyone was in good spirits Tuesday afternoon.

"We're promised to have clear skies from noon Tuesday through the rest of the week," Allen said of this week's forecast.

A special event for campers Tuesday evening will be a visit by staff of the Columbus Zoo animal program from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Allen said baby penguins are expected to be part of the traveling animal program.

On Wednesday, June 19 at 7 p.m., SATH's KAMP Dovetail will host its sixth annual auction and carnival at the Rocky Fork State Park campground off North Shore Drive.

The auction is open to the public and everyone is invited to attend. There will be a selection of Reds, Bengals, UK, Cleveland Browns and Ohio State items and a signed baseball from Pete Rose.

Another big item is a new 32-inch Emerson HD TV. Anyone with items to donate may drop them off at KAMP Dovetail anytime on June 18 or June 19 before 5 p.m. All proceeds will be used to help with this year's KAMP Dovetail, with the theme "Under The Sea."

On Thursday, campers will see a movie at Star Cinemas in Hillsboro, followed by daily recreational events and an evening dance from 7:30-9:30 p.m.
The Newport Aquarium animal program will visit from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Friday. Baby alligators are expected to be on display for campers and volunteers.

The annual camp concludes on Friday afternoon.
