The Highland County District Library and the African-American Awareness Research Council hosted the 2012 Black History Month program Feb. 18, honoring the Rev. Hurd Latimer and the late Charles E. Cole.
Jennifer West welcomed honorees and guests and Charles Harris, AAARC president, served as master of ceremonies.
A graduate of West High School in Columbus, the Rev. Hurd Latimer went on to attend both the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Ranger Academy and Cedarville College.
He was employed as a park ranger at Rocky Fork State Park from 1985 until his retirement in 2008.
Ordained in 1989, he currently serves as pastor of Fall Creek Friends Church.
Charles Edward Cole
• A Hillsboro High School graduate, Charles Edward Cole served in World War II.
He retired from the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base after 28 years of service. He and his wife, Elma McBride Cole, had three children.
Mr. Cole was an organizer and active member of the Highland County Community Action Organization for many years, serving as a special project director.
He also served on the Veterans' Relief Board, the Highland County Housing Corporation and the Highland County Children Services Board.
Mr. Cole passed away in 1997.[[In-content Ad]]
