A Hillsboro man was sentenced to community control and ordered to serve 30 days in jail recently after pleading guilty to one count of assault on a peace officer.

Mathew Segraves, 29, was indicted in September and charged with two counts of assault on a peace officer, both fourth-degree felonies. The indictment alleged that on or about July 29, Segraves “did knowingly cause or attempt to cause physical harm” to two separate victims.

As previously reported by the Highland County Sheriff’s Office, on Monday, July 29 at 10:10 p.m., the Highland County Communications Center received multiple calls of a male reportedly lying in the roadway in the 1700 block of state Route 41, in Brushcreek Township. As deputies arrived on the scene, they were encountered by a male, later identified as Segraves, wearing only underwear.

Segraves allegedly approached deputies in an aggressive manner. After allegedly failing to comply with officers’ commands and continuing to act in an aggressive manner, it is alleged that the suspect physically attacked both deputies.

According to court records, Segraves pleaded guilty to one count Dec. 9, with the remaining count dismissed.

Court records show that Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss followed the recommended sentence as contained in Segraves’ plea agreement during a sentencing hearing Jan. 8. Coss imposed a 30-day sentence in the Highland County Jail, effective immediately, with no jail time credit, and ordered Segraves to serve three years of community control. Segraves was additionally ordered to successfully complete residential treatment for substance use disorder and any recommended aftercare.
