GOBA bike tour kicks off in District 9; motorists reminded to share the road

Summers and weekends are a busy time for travelers, and this Father’s Day weekend and the start of summer will likely be busier than most in southern Ohio as bicyclists join motorists on several local and state roadways.

Beginning Saturday, June 16, and continuing throughout the week, bicyclists will be making their way through Highland, Ross and Pike counties in District 9, as well as Pickaway, Clinton and Fayette counties, as part of the 24th annual Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure.

Sponsored by Columbus Outdoor Pursuits, a volunteer-based organization that provides opportunities for outdoor recreation and activities, the GOBA is a weeklong bicycle tour through Ohio that features a different part of the state each year. Organizers of the event estimate approximately 3,000 bicyclists will be touring the region, following along various state and county routes and riding approximately 50 miles each day.

“Throughout the coming week, there will be thousands of people participating in the GOBA tour in southern Ohio and District 9, and our utmost concern is for the safety of all who use our roadways, both motorists and bicyclists,” said ODOT District 9 Deputy Director Vaughn Wilson.

Bicyclists will start their journey in Hillsboro on Sunday, June 17, and following a weeklong tour that will take them over roadways to Chillicothe, Ashville, Washington Court House and Wilmington, they will return to Highland County on Saturday, June 23.

The designated state routes in District 9 for this year’s GOBA tour include S.R. 28, S.R. 72, S.R. 73, S.R. 138 and S.R. 771 in Highland County; S.R. 220 and S.R. 335 in Pike County; and S.R. 28, S.R. 104, S.R. 159 and S.R. 772 in Ross County. In addition to these routes, bicyclists will be traveling over several local or county roads in the these counties, as well as in Pickaway and Fayette counties in District 6 and Clinton County in District 8.

During the upcoming bike tour and whenever traveling alongside bicyclists, motorists are reminded to share the road, drive responsibly and exercise additional caution.
