Former Columbus Division of Police Officer convicted in 2020 shooting death
A Franklin County jury Monday convicted former Columbus Division of Police Officer Adam Coy in the shooting death of 47-year-old Andre Hill in December 2020.
Coy, 48, was found guilty on all three charges against him: murder, felonious assault and reckless homicide.
Deputy Chief Counsel Anthony Pierson and Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Renee Amlin prosecuted the case.
On Dec. 22, 2020, Coy responded to a non-emergency disturbance call from a resident on Oberlin Drive about an SUV they didn’t recognize. When Coy arrived, he spoke briefly to Hill, the occupant of the vehicle.
Hill left the vehicle and went into the garage. Coy observed Hill in the garage and walked toward the garage to talk with him. As Hill emerged from the garage, Coy shot him.
Police confirmed Hill was unarmed when he was shot. Coy testified in court that he believed Hill was carrying a weapon. Hill was pronounced dead a short time later at Riverside Methodist Hospital.
Coy’s bond was revoked, and he was taken into custody. Franklin County Court of Common Pleas Judge Stephen McIntosh, who oversaw the trial, set a sentencing date of Nov. 25.
