The Highland County Board of Elections may soon reduce its hours of operation from 32.5 hours per week to 30 hours per week.
In a proposal to the county commissioners this week, the board of elections outlined new hours, beginning in 2010, as follows: Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The staff will work 40-hour weeks during the four weeks prior to an election and the two weeks after an election.
The board also agreed to a 20-percent reduction in salaries for 2010.
Since September 2008, volunteer time has saved a total of $18,068.48, the board said.
“They’ve gone about as far as they can go with cuts,” Commissioner Gary Heaton said at Monday’s commission meeting. “We might send the board a letter of thanks for taking a cut.”
In other discussion:
• The commissioners said a number of delinquencies from Rocky Fork Lake sewerage customers is adding to budget difficulties.
“Since we’ve had all the maintenance on grinders and pumps, it’s depleted the maintenance fund balance.”
Commissioner Shane Wilkin said he would discuss the issue, particularly when resident pay their sewerage bill with their property taxes, with Auditor Bill Fawley.
• Commissioners said the U.S. Census Bureau is seeking a small office for its Questionnaire Assistance Center (QAC) for the 2010 census. The bureau will need office space for approximately 15 hours per week from March 19-April 19.
The commissioners mentioned the small meeting room in the Administration Building as a possible location.
• Commissioners passed two resolutions by 3-0 votes: A modification in the Board of Developmental Disabilities Help Me Grow budget from rental to supplies, in the amount of $600; and a modification in the general fund budget from contracts and services to maintenance/repairs in the amount of $5,000.[[In-content Ad]]
