Dotson, Hill runners-up in World Championships

The weekend at the King of Cornhole for Jay Dotson and Brandon Hill was one of high success, as they finished runners up in the doubles event, while placed in the individual category as well.

Dotson and Hill finished in second place in the world doubles event as they lost a close match to eventual world champions Shane Andrews and Danny Black.

Getting to the finals, Dotson and Hill, who finished the regular season with the No. 1 overall ranking, they defeated four other teams on their way to the second place finish.

"We were really proud of how we played," Hills to The Highland County Press. "We didn't embarrass ourselves, and enjoyed the entire experience.

"It was a good time around good friends. Finishing like we did motivates us to come back next year."

In the individual King of Cornhole event, Dotson reached the Final 8, as he was defeated by eventual world runner-up Eric Zocklein.

On the way to the final eight individual players in the world, Dotson defeated three players in Mike Rice, Toby Smith and Chris Day.

Hill was defeated by eventual world champion Isidro Herrera in the first round.

In a consolation bracket, Hills defeated four players, as eventually he met up with his doubles teammate Dotson, where Dotson was eventually the winner of that match, finishing fifth place overall in the singles event. Hill ended the tournament in the Top 10 as well, taking home ninth place.

The duo of Hill and Dotson, along with Chase Lackey and Zocklein were honored with by being the winners of the prestigious Farfsong Cup.

"Being named with that honor really mean a lot," Hill said. "That is forever, and can't be taken away. Who that award is named after and to have our names on the cup, I can't express how important and how much it means.

"I'm really proud of it."

Dotson is a 1986 graduate of Lynchburg-Clay and Hill graduated from Whiteoak in 2008.

When the duo gained their No. 1 regular season ranking they had to win regional and major tournaments.

From there, the top six finishes they had in the regionals counted toward their final score with the maximum points earned from the regionals being 150, as the winner of each regional gains 25 points.

Dotson and Hill, of 150 points possible at regionals, they earned 149, winning five times at that level. From there, they’ve earned 50 at the majors and 266 from scratch games for a total of 465 points during the regular season.
