Chili supper, dessert auction brings in funds for SCA

An annual chili dinner and dessert auction held Thursday may have brought in more than $2,000 for the Highland County Society for Children and Adults.
"It was a wonderful night," said Debbie Rhude, of Heartland of Hillsboro, an event organizer and sponsor. "So far we have taken in $1,868, but we still have money out."
Last year the event brought in $2,000, "and we're thinking we will break the $2,000 mark, but I don't want to confirm that yet."
The event, held at the Old Pondo Banquet Center, took in 187 pre-sale tickets, with additional people who paid at the door.
"There were a lot of people there, and it was just a fun evening," she said "It was like a social event. This is our sixth year having it, and usually there is a little downtime or a lull in people coming in, but it wasn't like that. There was a continuous stream of people coming in."
The chili served during the dinner were made from recipes from Heartland's recent chili contest. Vicki Kirk was the winner of the hot recipe and Sheila Brockman was the winner with the mild recipe.
All of the proceeds of the event will go toward the Highland County Society for Children and Adults.
Rhude said the event would not have been possible without sponsors, Wilkin-Wilkin Insurance, NCB, Ponderosa and Kroger. Hillsboro Rotary members also volunteered, Rhude said, including Terry Mull who helped serve the chili, and Rick Williams who provided the auctioneering services for the dessert auction.
"It takes everyone working together, and we were like a wheel," Rhude said.
A basket from Kroger that went for $55 brought in the most during the auction, and the other donated homemade desserts brought in a total of $392.
