During the weekend of Oct. 7, Ohio first responders participated in GOSAFER (Gas & Oil Safety Awareness for Emergency Responders) hands-on training.

This curriculum is the only of its kind in the nation and offers Ohio’s firefighters and other first responders specific safety training for the natural gas and oil industry, keeping them and the communities they serve safe.

“Our organization and Ohio’s natural gas and oil producers are grateful for everything these men and women do year round to serve Ohio,” said Bruce Tague, Executive Director of the Ohio Natural Energy Institute. “Offering first responders this training will help them stay safe and that is something we are proud to do.”

As a top energy-producing state, it’s critical for Ohio’s first responders to be well versed in the natural gas and oil industry and how to handle any emergency situation.

This course offered two sets of curriculum to attendees. First responders initially went through a virtual education followed by hands-on training. During this course, participants were educated on several subjects: the fundamentals of natural gas and oil, site safety, HAZMAT, production and equipment, storage, processing and transportation of petroleum products.

The training was held at the Wayne County Fire & Rescue Regional Training Facility. On Saturday before the training, the facility accepted a $22,000 grant from Energy Transfer’s First Responder Fund. Ohio’s natural gas and oil producers supported this year’s GOSAFER program, making it free of charge to participants.
