Whiteoak’s Jake Ward qualifies for state bowling tournament; Highland County athletes bowl at districts

Members of the Fairfield and Whiteoak boys and girls bowling teams competed in the district bowling tournament Feb. 20 at Shawnee Lanes in Chillicothe, with one individual — junior Jake Ward of Whiteoak — earning a trip to state.

Ward punched his ticket to state with a second-place finish of 634 pins as the only individual qualifier from the Southeast District tournament. He bowled a 228 in his first game, followed by a 194 in game two and 212 in game three.

Ward will make his debut at the OHSAA State Bowling Tournament Saturday, March 4 at Wayne Webb's Columbus Bowl.

The first-place individual at districts, senior Andrew Allen of Ironton, was a member of the state-qualifying team.

One other bowler from Highland County, senior Mason Goddard of Fairfield, also competed in the district tournament. He bowled a 541 (183, 199, 159) for a 13th-place finish as an individual.

On the girls side, the Fairfield Lady Lions competed as a team at the district meet, finishing in fourth place with a team score of 2,529 pins.

Fairfield was led by Hannah Ferguson, who finished eighth as an individual with a score of 459 (150, 147, 162). She was followed by senior Kara Gleadle in 11th with 434 pins (146, 128, 160), and senior Haley Shoemaker compiled an 18th-place individual finish with a score of 354 (125, 125, 104).

Rounding out the scoring for Fairfield were sophomore McKinley Cox in 23rd (202), junior Braylee Bartley in 24th (197) and sophomore Cheyenne Byler in 25th (152).

The Eastern Lady Warriors qualified for state as a team, while the individual qualifier was Briana Reynolds, a senior from Rock Hill.
