DODSONVILLE — Though the match was for a Southern Hills League victory, the night was really for Volley for a Cure.

The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs hosted the Fairfield Lady Lions as the friendly rivals played to a three-game match win by the Lady Lions, but the teams raised money through raffles, bake sales and T-shirt sales at the event Thursday night at LCHS.

LC's Volley for a Cure event was for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Final totals raised weren't available following the event, but T-shirt sales did reach over $600.

"We had a lot of donations and did make a good amount from all the bake sales and raffles tonight," LC coach Roger Hickey said. "We did this to get the girls to become aware of this cause. This is a good cause to become aware of."

Not only did the victorious Lady Lions play in this event, they will be hosting their own Volley for a Cure event this coming Monday at FHS, starting at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Lions will be playing for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program through the American Cancer Society. Fans who attend and wear pink will receive $1 off the ticket price as the Lady Lions will host the McClain Tigers.

"I've been working with the American Cancer Society for 19 years now," FHS coach MaryBeth Hodson said. "Our Volley for the Cure event will go to their Look Good, Feel Better program for breast cancer survivors. It helps with wig fitting and other things like their Face to Face program as well."

As for the actual SHL match on Thursday, the Lady Lions dominated all three matches, winning games by scores of 25-6, 25-9 and 25-12.

In the first game, the Lady Lions tallied an 11-3 lead with help from scoring by Whitney Hanenkrat, Makenna Corzatt and some out-of-play hits by LC.

After the Lady Mustangs stopped the scoring with a point by Kristi Hansen, FHS came back with scoring off serves by Brenna Simmons for a 19-5 lead. Sarah Putnam held FHS to a 20-6 lead, and the game ended with an ace by Hanenkrat for the 25-6 win.

In game two, FHS opened with a 13-0 lead with serves coming from Putnam, which included consecutive aces. Also scoring points in that 13-0 span was Makenna Corzatt.

The scoring was stopped when FHS hit their own net, and LC, who have one win this season, answered with five consecutive points, including points by Sawyer Rammel and Shayla Bennett, with Bennett gaining an ace.

Simmons helped FHS go to 17-5 on a black at the front of the net, followed by points from Makenna Corzatt. Sydney Corzatt gained a point to make it a 20-5 score for FHS. The final point of the second game was from an out-of-bounds hit by LC.

The third, and what was determined to be the final game of the match, was close in the early stages with LC and FHS tied at 6-6. Scoring points in that span for FHS was Putnam off her serves and an ace by Kaley Davis. LC's Claire Magie made the score 6-5 at one point in the third game.

A spike by Hanenkrat put FHS up 8-6, and after own net hits by LC and another point by Hanenkrat, the Lady Lions led 14-7.

Rammel put LC within five points of FHS (20-15), but in the end points by Simmons, Putnam and Makenna Corzatt ended the third game at 25-12.

"The girls were on top of their game with their serving," Hodson said. "Lynchburg-Clay had a positive attitude and had fun with their event, and that is important for this event."

The win puts FHS at 7-5 overall and 6-1 in the SHL. They will play at Whiteoak on Friday at 5:30 p.m. On Monday, they will host McClain in a non-league match, and next Tuesday, FHS will travel to Peebles.[[In-content Ad]]
