DODSONVILLE — The Southern Hills League Division I champion Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs and Highland County rival Fairfield played until the light ran out Monday, but that wasn't enough time on the diamond, with both teams finishing with a 5-5 tie after nine innings.

There is no makeup day scheduled to resume the game, but both teams did get another opportunity to fine-tune their game before they take the field for Thursday and Friday tournament games, respectively.

The Lions scored runs in the fourth and seventh innings, while the Mustangs scored their runs in the first, third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

In the seventh, the Lions took a one-run lead in the non-league affair with their three runs on four hits.

The seventh began with a one-out single by Joey Wilson, followed by Chase Fulkerson (a pinch runner) stealing second. After Blake Hildebrant kept the inning alive with a walk, Ian Adams singled in Fulkerson, followed by Cody Bennett gaining an RBI base hit, scoring Hildebrant.

Again, Kyle Carson performed at the plate, containing his hitting streak with a base hit to score Adams, putting FHS up one run.

Carson has hit in 14 straight games.

The Mustangs didn't hold back, scoring the tying run in their half of the seventh with Austin Fawley leading off with a double. He scored on a single by Ryan Doss. Doss took second on a wild pitch and stole third base but was left stranded 90 feet away.

For the Lions, Adams finished 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and one RBI. Bennett, Carson, Miller, Cody Tolle, Fulkerson and Wilson all had one hit.

Bennett gained an RBI, and Carson also drew a walk. Miller hit a double and finished with two RBIs. Quintin Schaffer was hit by a pitch.

For the Mustangs, Fawley was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a home run, while collecting three runs and two RBIs. Chaz Lanier was 2-for-4 with one run, and Colin Creek, Doss and Jacob Jones each had one hit. Creek tallied a walk, one run and one RBI. Lanier scored a run.

Pitching for the Lions were Carson and Miller. Carson pitched six innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks. Miller went three innings of relief, allowing no runs on three hits. Miller struck out four, and Carson had five strikeouts.

On the mound for the Mustangs was Terry Campbell, who tossed 6 2-3 innings. He allowed five earned runs on six hits and three walks. Campbell struck out five. Doss pitched 2 1-3 innings of relief, with no runs on three hits, while striking out three.

FHS committed five errors, while LC had another errorless game.

The Lions will face Manchester on Wednesday at 5 p.m. They will have their tournament game at FHS on Thursday at 5 p.m.
