LEESBURG – The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs finished their season sweep of Highland County rival Fairfield Friday night, as they scored three goals in the first half en route to a 5-2 Southern Hills League victory at Fairfield High School.

The Mustangs (3-1-1, 6-3-1) took the lead in the first half after sophomore Michael Smith netted the first goal of the contest, with the assist from sophomore Tyler Davidson, for the early 1-0 lead.

L-C added to their advantage with a goal from senior forward Wes Yeomans for the 2-0 advantage. The goal was assisted by Smith.

The score went to 3-0 after senior midfielder Brandon McCarthy netted a goal for the final point of the first half.

The Fairfield Lions, who are winless on the season, battled back within one goal of the Mustangs with back-to-back goals by Austin Palmer in the second half. Palmer’s first goal was assisted by Sam Stauffer.

“I’m pleased with the way we continued to play after we were down in the first half,” Fairfield coach Brian Ortlieb said. “Our passing skills are starting to improve, and it showed in the second half.”

Leading by one goal, the Mustangs put the game out of reach of the Lions when Davidson and Smith scored goals for the Mustangs to make the score 5-2.

"We passed the ball very well. This was one of our better matches on ofense," Lynchburg-Clay coach Dennis West said. "Our defense did well, except for tw breakdowns."
