DODSONVILLE — It took until there were under 10 minutes remaining in the match, but the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs defended their home field and in the process gained a Southern Hills League win over rival Fairfield, 2-1 Wednesday.
The score was tied at 1-1 following the first 40 minutes of play, but LC's Josh Bauer scored what was the game-winning goal with 9:42 left on the clock off a cross kick by Brandon Storer, which put LC ahead for good.
"I though this was one of our best efforts of the year," LC coach Dennis West said. "We played under control and played well … our passing was better."
The first half was even on the scoreboard for both the visiting Lions and Mustangs as LC struck first with a goal by Devin Pierson, which was assisted by Noah Scott at the 26:10 mark of the half.

FHS tied the score with 3:47 remaining in the opening 40 minutes of the SHL match as junior Ryan Bates sent the ball past the keeper for the 1-1 score. Bates' goal was unassisted.
"We've been working on translating our defense to offense," FHS coach Brian Ortlieb said. "Toward the end, we did a good job, but at the end we also left the back side wide open and they took advantage.
"This whole year, our defense has been playing well, but we just need to keep working on translating our defense to the offensive side. We're getting there, but not there quite yet."
Coach West credited keeper Josh Groves, who replaced Evan Bedard on Wednesday due to an injury in the previous match. West also praised the way his team played overall.
"Credit Josh … this was the first time he started at keeper for us this year, and he played well," West said. "All of our regular players played with as much discipline as I've seen. We've had our moments this year where we didn't played with a controlled effort, but (Wednesday) that was not a problem.
"This was a good win for us because Fairfield is a good team."
