Mangus repeats as HC Invitational champion

LEESBURG — Fairfield junior Michael Mangus ran well enough to repeat as the champion of the Highland County Invitational Tuesday at Fairfield High School, as he raced the FHS Lions to their third straight HC title.

Mangus ran a time of 17:12 as the junior outran the Hillsboro duo of sophomore DeAndre Steward (17:30) and senior Nathan Boone (17:58), who were second and third respectively.

In fourth was Fairfield junior Wyatt Crothers at 18:11, and fifth was HHS senior Joe Beery at 18:16.

The remaining runners in the Top 10 included LC junior Quinn Stoltz in sixth at 18:52 and Fairfield sophomore Dustin Willey in seventh at at 18:53, and in eighth was LC senior Aaron Collins at 19:05. Ninth place went to John Cain (FHS) at 19:11, and in 10th was freshman Zach Shmitz (FHS) at 19:19.

As for team standings, FHS won with 31 points, followed by HHS in second at 35. LC was third with 65, and in fourth was MHS at 118. WHS did not field a full team.

"I knew for us to beat Hillsboro, our 3-4-5 guys would have to step up as we didn't have Blake (Hildebrant) for us (Tuesday)," FHS coach Raymond Friend said. "As for the 3-4-5 guys … they did step up. They had to push hard to get us this championship, and Wyatt's finish for us was huge.

"I also want to say the great thing about this race is each year we have more and more kids running. Today in all the different levels, we had kindergarten-age kids to seniors in high school running … that is great to see."

Fairfield's Michael Mangus won the event with a time of 17:12. Wyatt Crothers came in fourth with a score of 18:11, followed by Dustin Willey in seventh at 18:53, John Cain in ninth at 19:11, Zach Shmitz in 10th at 19:19 and Matthew Leach in 11th at 19:25. Fairfield's other racers were Jacob Rammel, 23:51 and Layne Irvin, 24:34.

Hillsboro's DeAndre Steward finished in second with a time of 17:30, followed by Nathan Boone in third at 17:58 and Joe Beery in 5th at 18:16. Paul Burton finished in 12th with a time of 19:30, along with Guy Bailey in 13th at 19:34, Gabriel Tamborski in 14th at 19:36, Zach Middleton in 15th at 19:37 and Brendan Eltzroth in 16th at 19:38. Other runners for Hillsboro were Christian Schafer, 22:50; Dakota Bullock, 23:57; Cameron McConehea, 24:13; and Shane Maginnis, 27:25.

From Lynchburg-Clay, Quinn Stoltz finished in sixth with a time of 18:52, followed by Aaron Collins in eighth at 19:05, Noah Stoltz in 17th at 19:53 and Justin Gray in 19th with a time of 21:36. Also running for Lynchburg-Clay were Colt Dunseith, 22:40; Aaron Little, 22:41; Christian Inman, 22:44; and Nicko Rowlands, 23:17.

Racing for McClain were Tristan Smith, 23:25; Daniel Addington, 23:33; Micah Mootispaw, 24:53, along with Adomas Fabin, 26:56 and Preston Smith, 26:58.

Cody Feck of Whiteoak came in 18th with a time of 21:08, followed by Tyler Roberts in 20th at 22:18.
