Lions win 18th consecutive game; defeat Ripley

The 18th time on the court for the Fairfield Lions this season ended like all the previous games, and that is with the Lions gaining a victory. 

This time, on Wednesday night, the Fairfield varsity squad went on the road and defeated Southern Hills Athletic Conference counterpart, the Ripley Blue Jays, 58-29. 

The win improves the No. 3 state-ranked Lions to 18-0 overall and 11-0 in the SHAC. 

Fairfield opened the conference game with an 8-5 lead when the first quarter came to a close, as Larkin Friend made two baskets in the first frame, while teammates Trey House and Gunner Bennington each sank one bucket for their eight-point first quarter.

The Lions outscored the Blue Jays 18-7 in the second quarter, with those points coming off seven points by House (one 3-pointer), five points from Wyatt Collins (one 3-pointer), TJ Mootz with three points, Bennington with two points and Cade Miller with one point in the second frame. 

With the Lions leading 26-12 at halftime, the Lions took over the game in the third quarter as they added 21 points to their side of the scoreboard, while the Lions’ defense held RHS to another seven-point quarter in the third, increasing Fairfield’s lead to 47-19.

Fairfield’s third-quarter scoring saw seven players reach the scoring column, including Friend (one point), House (five points), Gabe Fouch five points), Mootz (four points), Bennington (two points) and Cade Miller (two points).

FHS won the fourth quarter at 11-10. Fairfield had four points from Logan McIntosh, three points from Friend and two points each by Mootz and Bennington in the final quarter.

In all, as a team the Lions totaled three 3-pointers (Collins 2, and House 1), and from the free-throw line they were 7-of-13. 

House led the Lions with 11 points in the win, followed by Collins with 10 points and Mootz with nine points. 

Also for the Lions, Friend and Bennington each scored eight points, Fouch totaled five points, McIntosh had four points and with three points was Miller. 

Ripley was led in scoring by Austin Manning with six points. At the free-throw line, the Blue Jays finished 6-of-10.

Next for the Lions is a home game Friday, Feb. 3 at home against West Union.
