LEESBURG — The Fairfield Lions broke out early and never looked back as they scored 10 total goals to defeat the Blanchester Wildcats, 10-0 Tuesday at Fairfield High School.

The Lions (7-6-1) led 8-0 at the half with three goals from Ryan Bates for a hat-trick and four from Blake Hildebrant, who totaled a hat-trick, plus one. Also scoring in the first half were Quintin Schaffer and Cody Bennett.

In the second half, goals were from Blake Hildebrant and Joey Wilson. The shutout at goal was a combined shutout by Wilson and Jon Crabtree as Wilson played a majority of the match at goal.

This was the sixth shutout of the season for the Lions.

"We played with much better intensity (Tuesday)," FHS head coach Brian Ortlieb said. "The guys came out and acted like they wanted to win. I can't say that about the last couple matches, but (Tuesday) I'm proud of the game the team played."

In the first half, Bates began the match with two goals in the first 15 minutes with an unassisted goal at the 34:30 mark and a goal assisted by Hildebrant with 27:58 showing on the clock.

Hildebrant scored around the 21-minute mark with the assist from Jon Crabtree. The score went to 4-0 when Shaffer's goal landed in the back of the net with 16:20 remaining in the opening 40 minutes with the assist by Hildebrant.

Again, Hildebrant (with the assist by Bates) added to the FHS lead with 8:45 left in the opening half. Bates scored his hat-trick near the 2:00 mark of the half with an assist by Hildebrant. His goal was followed by another goal, making the score 7-0, from Bennett, with the assist again by Hildebrant. Hildebrant scored his third goal (assisted by Bates) with under a minute left in the first half for an FHS lead of 8-0.

The final two goals in the scored half were scored by Hildebrant and Wilson with the assist by Paul Dean.

"Everyone got some playing time, and I really want to talk about the play of Logan Bates," Ortlieb said. "Logan played a nice game. He didn't score any goals, but he played up front, and when he gets in the game, he gives everything he has."

FHS will host the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs Friday.
