HILLSBORO — The Fairfield Lions lived to fight once more, defeating the Northwest Mohawks, 2-1 Monday at Richards Memorial Field in the Division III SE District Sectional Semifinal.

FHS, a No. 3 seed in the Southwest bracket of the SE District, scored both goals in the first half, taking a two-goal lead at halftime.

The first Lion goal came early, at the 36:45 mark of the first half, when junior Austin Palmer headed the ball into the net, off a kick from senior Cody Ferrell for the 1-0 lead. Ferrell was credited with the assist.

At the 28:33 mark Sam Stauffer converted a penalty kick for the second and final FHS goal. Stauffer was also credited with an assist during the first goal scored by Palmer.

The Mohawks scored their lone goal with 9:55 left in the second half.

FHS coach Brian Ortlieb liked the way his defense played throughout the match. The defense included: Chris Ortlieb, Sam Dean, Quentin Shaffer, Dakota Hargrave and keeper Joey Wilson.

"The defensive line held and we came out pretty strong," Ortlieb said. "I'm proud of the way the defense played, and the midfield held well. This was one of our better games of the season."

Wilson had a tremendous save for the Lions at the 8:50 mark of the first half, preserving the then-two-goal advantage of the Lions.

Ortlieb also stated his team is working like that: a team.

"The guys are being great teammates," he said. "They are doing what we want them to do, and play with more discipline. They have a better understanding of the game compared to this time last year and aren't playing like a bunch of individuals, but working for their teammates.

"That makes a big difference."

He also wanted to thank the Hillsboro schools for allowing them the use of Richards Memorial Field, due to a scheduling conflict where both the FHS boys and girls soccer games were slated at the same time and location due to their tournament draw.

"We appreciate Hillsboro for lending us their facilities, and without their help we wouldn't have been able to play both of these games tonight. We just appreciate what they did for us."

FHS will play in the next round of the sectionals on Wednesday as they travel to face the Peebles Indians at 5 p.m.
