FAYETTEVILLE — Neither team reached 50 points on Tuesday, but that didn't matter to the Fairfield Lions as they left Fayetteville with a 47-36 Southern Hills League win.

The Lions (2-0, 3-2) led 7-6 after the first quarter and 15-12 at the half.

In the third, Fairfield broke out for 13 points, while their defense held Fayetteville in check with eight points.

In the final frame, each team put up their most points in any quarter, with the Lions outscoring the Rockets 19-16.

The loss drops Fayetteville to 0-2 in the SHL and 1-3 overall.

"It was the same story, different night," Fairfield head coach Matt Carson said. "We started slow, but I was pleased with our defense.

"We have to take better care of the ball, and we need to start looking up more for our teammates when in transition. Our offense is still a question mark, but I was pleased with our defense holding our opponent to under 40 points."

FHS senior Cole Putnam had a career night, scoring a game-high 14 points, with seven two-point field goals.

Putnam was followed by Brad Clay with 11 points, and Austin Hildebrant with nine points.

Also scoring for the Lions were: Quentin Williams (8), Austin May (2) and Wes Willey (3).

FHS made two 3-pointers, both by Williams.

The Lions finished with 19 two-point baskets and were 3-of-7 from the free-throw line.

For the Rockets, Trevor Clark led with 12 points. Fayetteville made 11 two-point baskets, three 3-pointers and went 5-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Fairfield will take the court again on Friday as they travel for a SHL game against Ripley.

In the JV game on Tuesday, the Lions defeated Fayetteville 60-19. Leading the Lions' JV team was Ryan Bates with 25 points.
