LEESBURG — The Fairfield Lions used a four-run sixth inning to capitalize on a 9-7 comeback Southern Hills League win over the Peebles Indians, Saturday morning at Fairfield High School.
Peebles led 4-2 after the first two innings, including a three-run first inning.
The Lions (9-3, 14-6) tied the game at four with a two-run third, but the Indians came back with their second three-run inning in the top of the fourth. After FHS added one run in the fifth, they had their aforementioned four-run sixth to seal the win.
In what proved to be the best inning of the game for the Lions, they started off the sixth with a walk forced by Kyle Carson. He took second when Nathaniel Miller was hit by a pitch. Carson scored on a single by Cody Tolle on a 2-2 count in the process of moving Wyatt Crothers, who was pinch running for Miller, to third.
With Quintin Schaffer pinch running for Tolle, he scored on a groundout by Joey Wilson.
The third run of the inning was the most difficult, scored by the Lions when Jordan Boles reached first on a fielder's choice, allowing Schaffer to score. What was difficult was the fact Schaffer was caught in a run down between third base and home, scoring when the catcher threw the ball into left field. Fairfield's final run was scored when Boles touched home plate on a wild pitch.
The first two FHS runs, in the second inning, were scored by Gage Montgomery on a single by Ian Adams and Blake Hildebrant on a bases-loaded walk by Carson.
In the bottom of the third, FHS added two more runs with Hildebrant singling in Wilson and Hildebrant scoring on a single by Adams.
Fairfield added one run in the fifth with Adams doubling in Boles.
The Lions were a tough challenge at the plate, gaining eight hits, forcing seven walks and one hit by pitch.
Adams led FHS with a 3-for-4 day (including a double) at the plate, collecting three RBIs. Cody Bennett drew two walks, and Carson had one run and one RBI, forcing three walks. Miller was hit by a pitch, along with one walk.
Tolle tallied one RBI, as did Wilson. Montgomery forced a walk and scored one run, as Boles scored two runs. Hildebrant was 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI. Nathan Hawkins went 1-for-3 with a walk.
Wilson earned the win on the mound, pitching the complete seven innings. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits and two walks. Wilson struck out 11 batters.
The win puts FHS at 14-6 overall (9-3, SHL) before they take on South Webster on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Chillicothe at the VA Memorial Stadium in a Division IV SE District semifinal matchup. FHS is also scheduled to play at Peebles this Thursday in their final make-up regular season game at 5 p.m.
