Lions tally 41 runs in weekend sweep

It was major league type of day for the Fairfield Lions baseball team, as they totaled 41 runs and 32 hits for a weekend doubleheader sweep of the Portsmouth Clay Panthers, Saturday at PCHS.
With the two wins, the Lions move to 7-3 overall, and they currently stand at 2-2 in the Southern Hills League.
As for their Saturday doubleheader against the Panthers of Portsmouth Clay, in the first game the Lions won 19-1, and in the nightcap of the twin bill, they won 22-11.
The first win was a run-rule victory, as the Lions scored nine runs to open the first inning and added one run in the second for a 10-0 lead after two innings.
FHS then took a 19-run lead in the fourth with a second nine-run inning in the fourth. The Panthers scored their lone run in the bottom of the same inning.
In game one, Zach Cox, Joey Wilson, Ryan Bates, Gage Montgomery, Chase Fulkerson, Wyatt Crothers and Kyle Carson each tallied two hits. Blake Hildebrant had one hit.
Cox finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, one walk and one RBI. Wilson was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and three RBIs. Bates was also 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, as was Montgomery with a double, three runs, two RBIs and one walk.
Fulkerson went 2-for-4 with two runs and one walk, and Crothers was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Carson was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs and three RBIs. Hildebrant was 1-for-3 with a double, three runs, two RBIs and two walks.
The pitching win went to Dylan Rhode for the Lions. Rhode gained the complete game victory with five innings pitched, allowing one run (one earned) on five hits and two walks. He struck out eight batters.
In the second game, the Lions trailed 5-2 after the first inning but tied the game at five following a three-run third.
FHS added three more runs in the fourth and seven more in the fifth inning for a lead of 15-9 after the fifth inning wrapped up.
In the sixth, the Lions scored three more runs, and PCHS scored two runs, making the score 18-11. In the seventh, the Lions scored the final four runs of the game.
The win was credited to Quintin Schaffer, who pitched five innings. Schaffer allowed nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits and three walks. He struck out five batters.
Crothers and Wilson also pitched for the Lions in the second game. In 1 1-3 innings pitched, Wilson struck out two batters, allowing no hits or runs. Crothers pitched 2-3 of an inning, allowing one hit and two runs (none earned) with three walks.
At the plate for FHS, Isaiah Liggins led the Lions at 4-for-6 with two doubles, one run and seven RBIs.
Also for FHS, hitting leaders included: Fulkerson, 1-for-2, one RBI; C.J. Alexander, one hit, two RBIs; Montgomery, 1-for-2, two walks; Nate Crabtree, 1-for-2, four runs, one walk, two HBP; Bennett, one hit, two runs, one walk; Carson, 3-for-4, one double, one triple, four runs, three RBIs, one walk; Cox, 2-for-3, three runs, three RBIs, one walk, one HBP; and Wilson, 3-for-4, one double, four runs, one RBI and two walks.
The Lions will play again on Monday when they travel to Sardinia for a non-league game with Eastern Brown.
