Lions score 16 runs in win over West Union

WEST UNION — Gaining 12 hits and 16 runs was more than enough for the Fairfield Lions on Tuesday, defeating the West Union Dragons, 16-4 Tuesday at WUHS.

The Lions (2-1, 5-2) gained the Southern Hills League win with two runs after the first two innings but trailed 3-2 following a three-run third by the Dragons.

FHS didn't trail for long as they put up eight runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth for a lead of 13-4 after the fifth inning was completed. The Lions added three final runs in the top of the seventh.

The pitching win went to Joey Wilson. Wilson pitched six innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits and six walks. Wilson struck out 12 batters.

Dylan Rhode pitched one inning of relief, allowing no hits, runs or walks while striking out one batter.

The Lions were led at the plate by Cody Bennett, Kyle Carson and Blake Hildebrant with two hits each. Bennett was 2-for-2 with two runs and two walks, while Carson was 2-for-3 with two runs, one RBI and one walk. Hildebrant was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.

Zack Cox, Isaiah Liggins, Gage Montgomery, Chase Fulkerson, Ryan Bates and CJ Alexander watch had one hit.

Cox was 1-for-3 with two runs, three RBIs, one walk and was hit by a pitch. Liggins was 1-for-1. Montgomery finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs, one walk and one run. Fulkerson finished 1-for-3 with a double and one run.

Bates was 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run, and Alexander was 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Leading West Union at the plate was Bryce Kramer at 2-for-3 with one walk.

The Lions will play again on Thursday as they travel to face the Whiteoak Wildcats in an SHL matchup, starting at 5 p.m.
