Lions fall in non-league matchup to Warriors

SARDINIA — Both the Fairfield Lions and the Eastern Brown Warriors had a strong first inning, but it was Eastern Brown who finished stronger, as they defeated the visiting Lions 6-3, Monday in a non-league game at EBHS.
Both the Lions and Warriors scored two runs in their half of the first inning, but a three-run third and one-run fourth were too much for the Lions to overcome, as they added just one more run in the sixth inning.
The Lions scored their two first-inning runs off of three hits and no errors, as Cody Bennett opened the game with a triple. He scored when Blake Hildebrant singled on a 1-2 count.
Hildebrant moved to second on a fly ball to the outfield and scored on a base hit by Joey Wilson.
EB answered by scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first off one hit and one error committed by the Lions. Scoring the runs were Austin Williams and Faul.
In the third, EB added the aforementioned three runs on three hits and one error. Scoring the runs were Faul, Broughton and Knight.
In their one-run fourth, scoring for the Warriors was McIntosh.
The final FHS run scored in the top of the sixth came when Gage Montgomery doubled with one out and moved to third on a ground out by Ryan Bates. Montgomery scored on a double by Fulkerson.[[In-content Ad]]
For the game, Bennett, Hildebrant, Zach Cox, Wilson, Montgomery and Fulkerson each had one hit. Hildebrant, Bennett, Fulkerson, Isaiah Liggins and Kyle Carson each drew walks, as Liggins and Hildebrant each walked twice. Carson was hit by a pitch.
The loss on the mound was charged to Liggins, who pitched four innings. Liggins allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks. He struck out two and hit one batter.
Wyatt Crothers pitched two innings of relief, allowing no runs or hits. Crothers walked three and finished with one strikeout.
The win was credited to Williams, who pitched five innings for the Warriors. Williams allowed two runs (both earned) on three hits and six walks. He struck out three. Lunsford pitched two innings, allowing one run (one earned) on three hits, one walk and one hit batter. He finished with two strikeouts.
