Lion 3rd, Indians 6th and Mangus continues to be 1st

Saturday's boys varsity cross-country race started with a cannon fired by the costumed First Mad River Light Artillery with a Revolutionary War cannon and ended with a familiar face at the front of the pack as Fairfield junior Michael Mangus was the winner of the George Rogers Clark Invitational at Springfield Catholic Central High School.

For the second week in a row, Mangus was the overall winner, outing a group of 285 runners with a winning time of 16:45, 41 seconds faster than Brady McBride of Pleasant Hill, who finished runner-up with a time of 17:26.  

As a team, FHS was third with 116 points, totaling a time of 1:30:18.05 (18:03.61). HHS was sixth at 221 points with a team time of 1:33:53.70 (18:34.74).

Following Mangus was teammate Blake Hildebrant, a junior, who finished fifth overall with a time of 17:32.  

Also for the Lions, John Cain was 33rd with a time of 18:33; Dustin Willey was 43rd with a time of 18:47; Wyatt Crothers was 45th with a time of 18:49; and Matthew Leach was 67th with a time of 19:18, even though he lost one of his shoes in the first half-mile of the race. Zach Shmitz finished 91st with a time of 19:45.

Leading the Indians was sophomore DeAndre Steward in 15th with a time of 17:56.93. Nathan Boone (a senior) was 18th at 18:02.09, and Joe Beery (a senior) was 21st at 18:03.45.[[In-content Ad]]

Also for HHS were: freshman Zach Middleton in 74th (19:30.87), sophomore Gabriel Tamborski (20:04.03), senior Cody VanLangen (20:05.19), junior Paul Burton (20:07.32), senior Guy Bailey (20:11.93), Brendan Eltzroth (20:24.95), senior Christian Schafer (22:42.63), sophomore Cameron McConehea (24:59.76), freshman Shane Maginnis (27:25.48) and sophomore Sawyer Davis (28:17.96).

The Fairfield Middle School boys team placed first for the second week in a row, dominating the field with a low score of 57 points to runner-up New Paris National Trail who had 100 points.  

The MS Lions also defeated 12 other schools, mainly Division I and II schools.  Wyatt Evans placed second overall out of 182 runners with a time of 11:41; Trent Tate was 4th with a time of 12:08; Klay Walker was 7th with a time of 12:20; Matthew Mangus was 20th with a time of 12:54;  Kayden Lamb was 26th with a time of 13:12; Mason Cain was 36th with a time of 13:25; Noah Richmond was 47th with a time of 13:41; and Tucker Ayres was 50th with a time of 13:46.

Leading HMS was eighth grader Noah Kunce with a time of 12:46.92 as HMS finished in 12th place.
