Late runs lead to Lions win over Green Devils

CHILLICOTHE — The Fairfield Lions overcame a six-run inning by the North Adams Green Devils to rally back for an 8-6 non-league win Monday at VA Memorial Stadium.
The effort by the Green Devils was one of their best of the season, scoring six runs in the second inning, to take a 6-4 lead, after the Lions scored four runs to open the game.
The Lions (5-2, 6-4), who were the home team, not only scored four runs in the first, but tied the game in the fifth inning with two runs and took the lead for good in the sixth inning with two more runs.
In the first inning, the Lions started with an inside-the-park home run, as Ian Adams hit the ball to right-center field to race around the bases.
With a one-run lead, Fairfield's Kyle Carson doubled. Carson was followed with a one-out single by Tyler Campbell, scoring Carson. Cody Tolle then singled, and Joey Wilson loaded the bases with a base hit.
After a runner was picked off at third base, Casey Jordan doubled to score Tolle and Wilson. Jordan went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs.
Then came one of the best innings of the season for the young Green Devil team, tallying six runs on five hits and two errors. After the second, NA led 6-4, keeping the lead until the fifth inning.
The second began with Brent Davis hitting a single to lead off the inning. Davis took second on a wild pitch and took third on another wild pitch by the Lions. Davis scored the first NA run of the game on a base hit by Matt Roades.
Devin Gardner followed by taking first on an infield error, loading the bases for the one-win Green Devils.
Cody Hall knocked in two runs with a base hit to the outfield. Nate Beasley continued the hot bats by the Devils with another single. Richard Gerlock took the bases on a fielder's choice.
Hank Sparks walked the bases loaded, forcing the Lions to change pitchers.
Treavor Hall kept the inning alive by reaching first on another FHS error, scoring Beasley.
Davis, in his second at-bat of the inning, hit a sacrifice fly to score Gerlock.
The Lions tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs on one hit.
FHS began the fifth with a walk by Campbell, who took second on a passed ball. Tolle reached first after being hit by a pitch.
With Nathan Hawkins pinch running for Tolle, the bases were loaded with a walk forced by Wilson.
After an out was recorded on a suicide squeeze that didn't work out as planned by the Lions, Jordan grounded out to short to score Hawkins.
Jordan Boles singled to score Wilson for the second run of the inning.
The final two runs of the game came in the bottom of the sixth with Carson and Nathaniel scoring. Carson singled to reach first and Miller drew a walk. Carson scored on a pick-off attempt that sailed to left field. Miller scored on a base hit by Jordan.
NA tried to rally in the seventh with Cody Jodrey gaining a one-out single. Colin Ryan pinch ran for Jodrey, but the Lions ended the game on a double play.
The win went to Jordan, who pitched 4 2-3 innings of relief. He allowed two hits, no runs and two walks. Jordan struck out six.
Carson was the starting pitcher, allowing six runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks. He struck out one in 1 1-3 innings. Miller earned the save for FHS, allowing one hit in one inning.
Beasley was charged with the loss. He pitched two innings of relief, allowing two earned runs on three hits and two walks. He struck out two.
Sparks was the starter for the Green Devils. Sparks, who pitched 3 1-3 innings, allowed four earned runs on 10 hits and two walks. Sparks had three strikeouts. Gerlock pitched 2-3 of an inning, allowing two runs, both earned, on two walks and no hits. Gerlock had one strikeout.
At the plate for the Lions, Carson was 2-for-4 with two steals and two runs. Campbell was 2-for-3 with one steal and one RBI. Dakota Hargrave had a steal and one run. Chase Fulkerson was 1-for-2 with a bunt single.
For the Green Devils, Beasley, Treavor Hall, Davis, Jodrey, Roades, and Bradley all had one hit. Cody Hall was 2-for-2.
FHS is scheduled to host Manchester today at 5 p.m. Weather permitting, North Adams will play at Whiteoak.
