Lady Mustangs topple Lady Lions

LEESBURG — Scoring 15 straight points to start the game, the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs continued their two-day winning streak against Highland County teams, defeating the Fairfield Lady Lions 59-22 Thursday at Grandle Gymnasium at FHS.
The previous night, LC defeated the Hillsboro Lady Indians, and it seemed the Lady Mustangs continued from where they left off on Wednesday night as they opened the game with 15 consecutive points, ending the first frame with a 22-2 lead.
This was the third game in four days for the Lady Mustangs as they went 2-1 in that span. They stand at 5-3 overall and 2-4 in the Southern Hills League. The loss drops FHS to 1-7 overall and 0-6 in the SHL.
"I told the girls before the game it would be a good Christmas present to go out (into the break) with two wins," LC head coach Whitney Lewis said. "We wanted three this week, but two in two days is good enough."
Fairfield did win the second frame at 10-6, cutting the lead to 14 points at halftime at 28-12.
The second half was all LC as they scored 18 points in the third to take a 30-point advantage at 46-16. In the fourth, LC won the final eight minutes at 13-6.
"(Wednesday) was a tough game for us, it was a physical matchup all game," Lewis said. "(Thursday) we wanted to come in and not let up. We played with good intensity, and we started off much better than we usually do, which I was happy with.
"I was happy we came out of the gate ready to go and ready to play the game."
It was the first quarter that set the tone with Emma Setty scoring first for the Lady Mustangs, followed by a 3-pointer from Karen Hilt and four consecutive points by Brooke Hertlein for a 9-0 lead. Hertlein finished with 15 points, and Setty ended the game with five points. Hertlein added seven rebounds and had nine steals.
Morgan Fittro added to the lead with fast-break points, and the scoring run was extended by points from Madysyn Creighton and Setty for a 15-0 lead with 3:53 left in the quarter.
Heather Cox broke the LC scoring run for the Lady Lions, but the frame ended with a wide-open 3-pointer by Hertlein and back-to-back buckets from Fittro.
FHS had their best eight-minute stretch before halftime, scoring 10 points. Scoring in the quarter for the Lady Lions were Kaitlin Evans, Lydia Sowders, Cox and Shelby Smithson.
After being held to two points in the first half, LC's Laney Lewis broke loose in the third as she tallied 11 points in the third, including a 3-pointer. Lewis led all scorers with a game-high 17 points and finished with 11 rebounds (five offensive) for a double-double. Lewis also had six blocked shots, three in the first quarter.
The remaining seven LC points in the third were from Fittro (who totaled seven points), Creighton and Hertlein.
With the game in-hand, LC added 13 more points in the fourth with Samantha Whitenack knocking down a 3-pointer, finishing the quarter with five points. Hilt, Hertlein and Lewis also added points in the fourth. Hilt finished with seven points.
As for the FHS second half, they totaled 10 points with Evans, Sowders, Cox and Smithson all scoring for the Lady Lions in the final 16 minutes.
For the game, LC was 3-of-8 from the free-throw line, and FHS was 4-of-8 in free throw shooting.
LC will play again next Wednesday (Dec. 28) at Paint Valley. FHS will also play again on Dec. 28 as they face the Hillsboro Lady Indians at HHS.
