LEESBURG — After suffering two consecutive losses in their past two matches, the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs got back on the winning side of things Wednesday evening.
Their opponent was the host Fairfield Lady Lions, and they kept the match close for the first half, but LC came back with four goals in the final 40 minutes for a 6-2 victory.
The effort by the Lady Lions, though, didn't go unnoticed by either coach.
"The last time we faced them, we didn't score a goal, and they played us with their second and third players. Tonight, we were a different team," FHS coach Amy Cox said. "This was a huge improvement from the last time we played them."
LC coach Dennis West even talked about the effort from the Lady Lions.
"I admired the way Fairfield played us," West said. "They played us hard and they had great improvement on their part."
LC improves to 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the Southern Hills League. Fairfield, on the other hand, is 0-10 overall, as they had to forfeit three wins from earlier this season as they had an ineligible player on the field.
The first-half goals for the Lady Mustangs were scored by Sydney Cromer and Shelby Stewart. Stewart finished with three goals on the night for a hat-trick as the freshman midfielder added her final two goals in the second half.
"We are still trying to recover mentally from our two losses last week," West said. "We just need to relax, and I told them the two losses were to a Division I and Division II team, and we haven't lost to a Division III team, which is who we will be playing come tournament time.
"We just need to get over those losses and accept the fact they were games against good competition."
The first goal went to the back of the net with Cromer kicking the ball from 18 yards away for the goal, as it was assisted by Taylor Scott.
The score went to 2-0 with Stewart scoring with an 18-yard kick of her own, with the assist from Karen Hilt.
The final for LC goals were by Stewart, Brandi Hunter and Scott.
Hunter's goals was from 8 yards out for the third LC goal for a 3-0 lead.
Cortney Huff scored the first FHS goal with 18:50 left in the final half, but it was followed by a second goal from Stewart. The score went to 5-1 with a third goal by Stewart with the assist from Hilt with 16:30 remaining.
The Lady Lions came back with a goal at the 13:50 mark with Heather Cox putting the ball into the back of the net, making the score 5-2.
LC scored one final goal with Scott scoring from 15 yards out, leaving 6:32 left in the match.
Shelby Smithson (FHS) had 23 saves on the night.
LC won't play again until next Friday where they will play at Eastern Brown in a SHL match.
"We'll be off for over a week, and we are going to work hard," West said. "We are going to scrimmage against each other, and we need to get our confidence back."
