MOWRYSTOWN — The Fairfield Lady Lions, after two forced days off due to rain, returned to Southern Hills League play with a 16-0 victory over the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats, Thursday at Whiteoak High School.
The Lady Lions displayed all the elements of their arsenal at a high level, including a high-powered offense, aggressive base running, outstanding defense and a brilliant pitching performance by Lauren Larrick.
Larrick threw her fourth shutout of the season and third one-hitter, as she struck out nine Lady Wildcat batters in the five-inning run-rule contest.
The Lady Lions offense collected 17 hits, seven for extra bases, with Heather Huff and Kortney Paris leading with three hits each.
FHS (10-1, 7-0) scored nine runs in the top of the first inning.
Huff swung at a wild pitch on strike three and was safe at first base to start the first inning. Huff stole second and scored on an infield single. Abby Thackston singled to right-center field to drive in Butler later in the inning.
Two outs later, Paris had an RBI single to centerfield, followed with a RBI double by Shelby Smithson. Jade Shelton singled to drive in Smithson, and Sirenity Smith was safe on an error. Huff and Butler, in their second at-bat of the inning, had back-to-back doubles, driving in runs to complete the nine-run first.
The Lady Lions added one run in the top of the third inning with Huff hitting a triple off the fence in left field. Huff scored the run later in the inning.
The top of the fourth was another big inning for the Lady Lions. In the inning, Paris and Shelton had doubles, and Huff had an RBI single to make the score 13-0.
FHS completed their scoring with three more runs in the fifth via singles by Thackston, Whitney Hanenkrat, and Larrick, along with a double by pinch-hitter Taylor Butler.
Larrick and Lady Lions' defense were perfect through the first three innings as she struck out six of the first nine Lady Wildcat batters.
Juanita Nichols reached base on an error in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Larrick struck out the next three batters, as she took a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth.
With one out in the fifth, Brittany Tolliver lined a single to left field for the only hit by Whiteoak.
Leading hitters for the Lady Lions included: Huff (3-for-3, double, triple, three runs, two RBIs), Paris (3-for-4, double, two runs, one RBI), Danielle Butler (2-for-4, double, two runs, four RBIs), Thackston (2-for-4, two runs, one RBI), Hanenkrat (2-for-4, one run), Shelton (2-for-3, double, two runs, two RBIs), Larrick (1-for-4, one run, one RBI), Smithson (1-for-3, double, one run, two RBIs) and Taylor Butler (1-for-1, double, one RBI).
