LEESBURG — The number of goals the Fairfield Lady Lions scored Tuesday night in the Division III SE District Sectional Semifinal match was a higher number than actual players they have on their roster.

With just 11 players suiting up against West Union, the Lady Lions, who have three wins this season, scored a total of 16 goals for a 16-1 tournament win at Fairfield High School.

The Lady Lions, with the win, advance to the sectional final match at Zane Trace High School. The Lady Pioneers are a No. 2 seed, and they will host the Lady Lions on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.

Zane Trace this season earned their seed with a record at the tournament draw of 10-1-2 as they play in the Scioto Valley Conference.

Of the 16 Lady Lion goals scored on Tuesday, five came from Lindsey Bernard.

Kylie Allen had a hat-trick with three goals, and Kaitlin Evans, Heather Cox and Courtney Huff each scored two goals. Allyna Hagen and Lizzy Jones each scored one goal.

"We've had a huge improvement since the first day of practice up to today," FHS coach Amy Cox said.

The last time these two teams met, FHS won by a score of 8-2.

"We were a completely different team tonight," Cox said. "This was a good win for our team."

Of the five goals by Bernard, three were scored in the second half and two in the first half. After 40 minutes of play, the Lady Lions led 6-1 with West Union scoring their lone goal in the first half, making it at the time a 3-1 score.

The match was played in West Union territory for a majority of the the 80 minutes, and it took less than 10 minutes into the first half for the Lady Lions to score their first of 16 goals against their Southern Hills League foe. The first goal was scored by Allen.

Earlier this week, Bernard and keeper Shelby Smithson were selected to the All-SHL team for their achievements this season.
