LEESBURG — The Fairfield Lady Lions simply struggled from the field as they continued to gain experience at the varsity level on Thursday night, falling to the West Union Lady Dragons 46-23.
The best quarter for the Lady Lions was the third where they outscored the Lady Dragons 9-2, scoring the first nine points of the quarter.
Other than that, the game was mostly controlled by the Lady Dragons and their pressure on defense as the Lady Lions shot 21-percent from the field.
This was the second win of the season for West Union as they previously defeated Whiteoak.
"We just have to do a lot more shooting in practice," Fairfield head coach Matt Hodson said. "If we can't make layups, we are in trouble.
"West Union is young like us, so we thought we matched up well with them, but we just didn't handle their pressure well."
The opening frame was close at the beginning with West Union's Natasha Barr scoring the first three points, but two points from Heather Cox made it a one-point score early on.
FHS (1-6) tied it later in the first with points from Shelby Smithson and Kaitlin Evans, but following that run, the Lady Lions were outscored 7-2 to end the quarter. Evans wrapped up the game with six points.
Fairfield then went on a scoring drought from the 2:56 mark of the first until the 1:34 mark of the second where they were outscored 19-0 for a deficit of 27-8. The scoring run was broken up by Smithson.
Scoring in the 19-point run for the Lady Dragons were: Logan Mason, Caitlyn Baldwin, Jaycee Cox, Jamee Graham and Barr.
FHS came out in the third with extra help as Cynnamon Sova-Davy returned to the game after being injured in the opening minutes of the game. Her return to the court helped free up other members of the team as Heather Cox scored seven of the nine FHS points in the quarter. Cox finished with a team-high nine points.
Smithson also scored in the third frame, finishing the game with six points.
FHS was held to just four points in the final quarter with Evans and Justice Hattan scoring for the Lady Lions.
As for WU, in the final frame the ran away with the win by scoring 15 points in the final eight minutes. Adding to the WU lead were Burns, Barr and Jaycee Cox. In the fourth, Cox scored eight points as she ended the game with a game-high 15 points for West Union. Barr ended the game with 13 points.
FHS will be back in action on Thursday, Dec. 22 as they host Highland County rival Lynchburg-Clay (2-2, 3-3).
