LATHAM — The Fairfield Lady Lions are, once again, a sectional champion.

For the second time in as many years, the Fairfield Lady Lions won a Division IV SE District Sectional championship, in five sets, defeating the Western Latham Lady Indians.

Last year, FHS defeated the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats, but on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010 the Lady Lions battled back from adversity, being down to their final set, winning the final three sets of the match, keeping their postseason run alive.

FHS (7-10) dropped the first two sets to the Lady Indians by scores of 25-17 and 25-13.

After those sets, the Lady Lions flipped the switch, playing with the heart of a lion.

Down two sets, FHS rallied back to win the next three by scores of 25-19, 25-11 and 15-12.

"I'm so proud of my girls," FHS head coach Mary Beth Hodson said. "The way they continued to play, it was outstanding. They started off slow, but came back and played well for the rest of the night."

Hodson talked about her setters, as she described their play as "in the zone."

"Our setters were on," she said. "Sydney (Corzatt) and Kaley (Davis) was right up there and got our hitters to the net."

"All of our girls played well," Hodson said. "Erin (Clarkson) had some good hits. Makenna (Corzatt) played well. Again, I can't say enough how proud I am of the girls."

Makenna Corzatt finished with 18 attacks, three kills and one block, finishing with a total of 32 points. Brenna Simmons had 20 attacks, six kills and three blocks.

Whitney Hanenkrat scored seven points, along with 29 attacks, 12 kills, 22 service receptions and four blocks.

The Lady Lions, a No. 5 seed, will play in the district semifinals, on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. The match will take place at Wellston High School. They will take on No. 1 seeded Eastern Pike who defeated Symmes Valley in three sets by scores of 25-2, 25-11 and 25-8.
