Fairfield Lions win 2 over weekend; defeat North Adams, Portsmouth Clay

LEESBURG — The Fairfield Lions took care of business on Friday night as they defeated the visiting North Adams Green Devils in a battle for first place in Division I of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference by a 54-37 score at Grandle Gymnasium on Hall of Fame night. 

The Lions doubled up the visiting Green Devils 12-6 at the end of the first quarter, as the score was tied twice early on. The Lions broke the tied score with a put-back basket by Larkin Friend, and after the Green Devils tied the score with two free throws, Fairfield came back with a three-point play and a 3-pointer from TJ Mootz for their six-point lead at the conclusion of the first quarter. 

Fairfield led by as many as 16 points in the second frame and ended the quarter with a 13-point lead, as they built a 27-14 advantage when halftime arrived.

The Green Devils struck first in the second quarter with a 3-pointer, but the Lions came back with 13 straight points, as the scoring run started with a 3-pointer by Cade Miller, followed by a trey from Friend. 

Next was a layup by Friend and a 3-pointer from Trey House, and after a House blocked shot, he followed that later with a put-back basket with 1:18 left in the frame for a 25-9 lead over North Adams. NAHS answered with four straight points, but the Lions ended the first half with a layup at the buzzer by Fouch for their 13-point halftime lead. 

Fairfield outscored the Green Devils 13-10 in the third quarter, with the Lions leading by no less than 12 points in the quarter and by as many as 17 points with 4:26 left on the third-quarter clock. The Lions in the third quarter had two 3-pointers from Fouch, a 3-pointer by Miller and two points each from Mootz and Gunner Bennington. 

The Lions scored 14 points in the fourth quarter, while NAHS added 13 points to their side of the scoreboard in the final frame. 

FHS had seven of those 14 points scored by Mootz, as he was 5-of-5 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, along with making one two-point bucket. House added three points in the final quarter, and Wyatt Collins scored four points off two baskets in the fourth. 

In all for the Lions, they totaled 12 two-point baskets, seven 3-pointers and were 9-of-11 from the free-throw line. 

Mootz led the Lions with 17 points, including an 8-of-8 performance from the free-throw line for the game. Fouch finished with 10 points, and House totaled eight points. Friend finished with a total of seven points in the win, while Miller collected six points, Collins had four points and Bennington totaled two points. 

Fairfield saw Friend lead in rebounds with eight, followed by Mootz with seven and Bennington with six. Friend also led the Lions with six assists, and Collins led FHS with one steal. Bennington and House each had one block in the win. 

For North Adams, they were led in scoring by Jayce Rothwell with 10 points and Bransyn Copas with eight points. 

The following day on Saturday, the Lions traveled to Portsmouth Clay and won easily by a 63-13 score in non-conference action. 

Fairfield in their 50-point win led 22-0 after the first quarter, and following a 19-3 second frame, held a 31-3 halftime lead. FHS won the third frame at 16-8 and the fourth quarter at 6-2. 

Mootz was the leading scorer with 24 points, as he also had seven rebounds. House finished with 14 points, and Friend totaled nine points. Other FHS scoring included Bennington and Collins with six points each and Miller with four points. 

Friend led FHS with eight assists, and Collins was the Lions’ leader with five steals. Bennington had the FHS lead with two blocks, and also with a block was Mootz. 

Following the two weekend victories, the Lions are still undefeated at 17-0 overall, and they are 10-0 in the Division I SHAC standings. 

Next for the Lions is a SHAC game on Wednesday, Feb. 1 on the road at Ripley. From there, the Lions play on Friday, Feb. 3 at home against West Union, then on Saturday, Feb. 4 at home against Ironton St. Joe at the Chad Hodson Classic. 

The rest of the Lions’ regular-season schedule consists of  a home game Tuesday, Feb. 7 vs. McClain (Grandle Gymnasium), and they will wrap up the regular season Friday, Feb. 10 on the road with an SHAC game against Lynchburg-Clay.
