Fairfield Lions earn SHAC win over rival Lynchburg-Clay

The Fairfield Lions stayed undefeated in Southern Hills Athletic Conference play, plus defended their home court against Highland County rival Lynchburg-Clay on Tuesday, Dec. 20 by a 66-60 score at Grandle Gymnasium. 

The Lions — now 4-0 in the SHAC standings — trailed after the first quarter against a strong Lynchburg-Clay team by a 15-8 score. The second frame was improved for the home team as they outscored the Mustangs, 9-4 for a halftime score of 19-17 in favor of the visiting Mustangs. 

As both teams combined for 36 points in the first half, that wasn’t the case in the final two quarters with the third quarter seeing Fairfield put up 24 points, while LCHS scored 19 points, for a 41-38 score in favor of the home team Lions. 

In the fourth and final frame, the Lions added 25 points to their overall total, while Lynchburg-Clay scored 22 points for the final six-point win for Fairfield at 66-60. 

The Lions had three players score double figures, with TJ Mootz finishing with 26 points, as he made seven field goals and was 12-of-12 from the free-throw line. 

Tytis Cannon finished with 14 points, as he connected with six two-point baskets and he was 2-of-2 in his free-throw attempts. Trey House also scored double figures with 10 points with two two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and he was 3-of-6 from the free-throw line. 

Also for the Lions, Wyatt Collins, Larkin Friend and Gabe Fouch each scored four points, while Gunner Bennington and Cade Miller each finished with two points. 

As a team, the Lions totaled 23 rebounds, with Cannon leading the way with eight boards (two offensive) and he totaled six assists, while Friend totaled seven assists for the team lead in their win over LCHS. Friend and Collins led the Lions in steals with three each, and Bennington had one block for the Lions. 

The Lions finished 17-of-20 from the free-throw line. 

For the Mustangs, they also had three players in double figures with Brady Chisman and Ian Waits each finishing with 17 points, while Bryce Binkley totaled 10 points.

Chisman made three two-point baskets, two 3-pointers and he was 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Waits totaled one two-point basket, and he made five 3-pointers. 

In his 10-point effort, Binkley made four two-point baskets, and he was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. 

Also for the Mustangs, Denver Clinton totaled nine points, and Logan Shope scored seven points.

Waits led LCHS in rebounds with five, while four LCHS players finished with two assists each. Three players from Lynchburg-Clay totaled one steal. 

LCHS finished 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. 

The loss moves the Mustangs to 3-3 in the SHAC and 4-3 overall. FHS improves to 4-0 in the SHAC and 6-0 overall. 

Next for FHS is a non-conference game Wednesday, Dec. 28 at home against Adena. Next for the Mustangs is a non-conference game Thursday, Dec. 29 on the road at Paint Valley.
