On Thursday night (Jan. 19), the Fairfield Lady Lions defended their home court with a 59-25 win over their Highland County counterpart the Hillsboro Lady Indians for a non-conference victory at Grandle Gymnasium.

Fairfield took control of the game with a 20-8 first-quarter lead after time expired in the opening frame, then following a 24-6 second quarter, the Lady Lions held a halftime lead of 44-14.

Hannah Hamilton began the game for the Lady Lions with two points after taking the ball the length of the court for a layup, and that was later followed with a put-back basket by Fairfield’s Kassi Miller for the easy four-point lead with 5:41 left on the clock.

HHS answered with a 3-pointer from Blake Herdman, but the Lady Lions had plans of their own by sinking a 3-pointer with the shot from Miller, then another 3-pointer from Hamilton, plus a basket by Peyton Magee, for a 12-3 lead with 3:39 left in the opening frame.

HHS — following a timeout — had a three-point play from Herdman, but FHS responded with a 3-pointer by Magee, a free throw made by Hailey Tolle and two free-throw conversions by Hamilton, making the score 18-6.

Hillsboro’s Kyra Boyd made two free throws of her own, but the final scoring of the first quarter was a long-range jumper by Faith Donley for the 12-point lead at 20-8.

Fairfield in the second quarter opened with seven straight points off a 3-pointer by Miller and two two-point shots from Donley. HHS responded by scoring four consecutive points off baskets by Rylie Scott and Addyson Miles, but eventually the Lady Lions led by 23 points as they went on a 10-2 run for a 37-14 lead with 2:19 left in the first half.

In that run by FHS, points were scored by Magee, Donley and Hamilton, forcing Hillsboro to call a timeout.

After returning to the court, FHS ended the frame with seven points after the timeout off a put-back basket by Magee, a layup by Magee and a 3-pointer from Hamilton for a 30-point lead at 44-14.

The second half had a running clock, as both teams scored eight points each in the third with FHS having their points scored by Magee with five (including a 3-pointer) and a 3-pointer from Miller. Hillsboro’s third frame saw their eight points be scored by Herdman with six and Scott with two.

HHS scored three points in the fourth quarter, off a 3-pointer from Herdman. For the game Herdman led HHS with 15 points, while Scott totaled four points, and with two points each were Peighton Bledsoe, Miles and Boyd.

For the Lady Lions in the fourth frame, Miller made a 3-pointer, Tolle scored two points and Magee made two free throws for two points.
