LEESBURG — The first half was pretty productive for the Fairfield Lady Lions … the second half, not so much, as turnovers in the third frame all but ended any chance for a Fairfield win as they fell to the visiting Manchester Lady Greyhounds, 62-33 Monday evening.

The quarter that got away from the Lady Lions against their Southern Hills Athletic Conference foe was the third.

Entering the third eight-minute frame, the Lady Lions trailed by just six points at 29-23, but the quarter ended with them trailing by 49-29 as Manchester outscored them, 20-6 in the quarter.

Fairfield began the third with a jumper from Kaitlin Evans, bringing FHS to within four points. Evans led all scorers with a game-high 20 points. Again, later in the quarter, Evans brought the Lady Lions to within four points of tying the game with points off a rebound at the 6:09 mark of the frame.

Evans made two 3-pointers in the first half and was 2-of-4 from the free-throw line.

"Kaitlin played the game of her career so far," Fairfield head coach Matt Hodson said. "She gave her all, and it was too bad we couldn't help her out.

"She (Evans) gives her all out there every game, and it is good to see her play like that, both offensively and defensively."

Then in the next four minutes, nothing went the way of FHS as they committed eight straight turnovers, which led to a 14-0 run by Manchester, who built their lead to 27-25 with 2:35 left on the clock.

During their run, the Lady Greyhounds scored many of their points off steals and fast break points.

The run began with a jumper by Tess Burns, followed by a steal at half court and layup by Morgan Johnson. Burns followed with four straight points off two steals and layups. Haylee Adams got in on things as she stole the ball and took it to the hoop for an MHS lead of 41-27 with 3:20 on the clock.

Again, Adams scored on a FHS turnover, and the run was finalized with Ranielle Casey scoring off an inbounds pass with 2:33 on the clock.[[In-content Ad]]
The 14-0 run eventually morphed into an 18-2 run to end the frame as Heather Cox scored the two points for FHS off free throws. Casey added the four points for Manchester to make it an 18-2 run in a span of 5:41.

MHS outscored the Lady Lions 13-4 in the fourth. Lydia Sowders and Cox each scored two points in the fourth for FHS. Sowders finished with six points, and Cox added five for the game. Also scoring in the game for FHS was Justice Hattan with two.

"Turnovers hurt us … it is the same story with us," Hodson said. "We got behind early, and we just need to take care of the ball."

As for the Manchester scoring, Adams led with 19 points. Hannah Rideout and Burns each scored 12 points in their win over FHS. Casey finished with 10 points. Also scoring for the Lady Greyhounds were Johnson with seven and Brett Himes with two.

Though turnovers hurt FHS in the opening half as well, they didn't do as much damage. Manchester took the early lead at 6-0, but the Lady Lions did make it an 8-6 score as Evans scored the first five FHS points with a jumper and 3-pointer. Later in the quarter, Sowders sank a jumper to cut the FHS lead to six points with 1:01 on the clock, but points by Manchester's Casey and Johnson put MHS ahead 18-8 after the first frame.

The Lady Lions outscored the visitors 15-11 in the second quarter.

For FHS in the second, Evans totaled 11 of the 15 points, while Sowders and Cox combined for the remainder of the scoring with two points each in the frame.

In JV play, FHS defeated MHS 20-17 in two quarters. Leading FHS was Heather Sanderson with seven points. Macie Pauley scored six, while Shaylee Carson scored five and Brittany Cox added two points.

Fairfield will play again on Thursday as they face West Union.
