For the 10th consecutive match, the Fairfield Lady Lions left the court as the winning team as they took down the Peebles Lady Indians in three tough sets Thursday at Fairfield High School in their final home match of the season.

The win gives the Lady Lions a Southern Hills League record of 8-2, tied for first place in Division II of the league with Fayetteville, who dropped a five-set match to the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats Thursday. WHS is in third in Division II of the league at 7-3.

FHS has three league matches remaining on the schedule, all on the road as Monday they'll be at Ripley, Tuesday at Fayetteville and Thursday at Manchester as the league title will be decided next week.

As for Thursday's match against Peebles, FHS won by set scores of 26-24, 25-20 and 25-22.

"This was a good, tough match for us," FHS coach MaryBeth Hodson said. "The girls fought back when they needed to and played very well. I was pleased with how our girls played, and they just never quit.

"It was full-go from the first whistle."

At first for the Lady Lions, it looked like it could be a long night not in their favor as Peebles opened set one with six straight points with help from Baylee Wallace and Annie McFarland. Later in the set, with PHS leading 14-7, the Lady Lions began their rally as they eventually tied the score at 15 with a block by Brenna Simmons. Also in that run of points by FHS, Sarah Putman scored a point at the front of the net.

FHS later tied the score again at 19 with a play at the net by Makenna Corzatt. Again, the score was tied at 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24, but points by Cynammon Sova-Davy and Simmons gave FHS the 26-24 set one win.

Set two began opposite for FHS as they led 4-0 at the start, but the Lady Indians came back to make it an 8-6 score. FHS added to their lead with help by Sova-Davy keeping the ball in play and Putnam scoring the point for the Lady Lions.

Later in set two, Peebles made it a 17-14 score and later 18-17. That's when FHS turned their play up by scoring four straight points, but again, Peebles made the win tough as the score went to 24-22 until Sova-Davy pushed FHS to the set win.

Set three was tied seven times, the final time being 7-7, after that, FHS led for the entire set, never trailing as they took a lead of 10-7 with help from Makenna Corzatt.

FHS eventually took a lead of 19-16 and 23-19 with a block by Halie Chain and a leaping hit by Simmons. The final two points of the match came off a hit from Simmons and ended with Peebles hitting their own side of the net.

"I want to say how much Sirenity Smith's digging played a big role in this win," Hodson said. "She was digging everything on returns."

Coach Hodson also spoke about next week's road trip en route to a potential second straight SHL title.

"We are on the road all next week, but it will be fine playing on the road for those three games," she said. "The road trips don't bother the girls … they are a strong group."

On Thursday before the match, the seniors were honored for playing in their final home match. Also, the postseason tournament draw will be this Sunday.
